Troop 152 Scout Thadeus O'Neill reached out to the Saint Joseph Retreat & Conference Center in 2019 to inquire about an Eagle Scout Project.
"There are few outdoor items that benefit more guests than benches," said Father David Huemmer, Chaplain & Spiritual Director at SJRCC. "Our campus features so many prayerful spots, and having a place to sit, pray, reflect or enjoy nature is always welcome."
Despite some delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Thadeus, along with help from scouts from Troop 152 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Westfield, completed two benches this spring.
The treated lumber benches are simple in style, but the design provides a reclined back perfect for outdoor comfort.
The two benches are placed in front of the St. Therese of Lisiuex grotto.
With his project complete, Thadeus will submit the project binder to the Crossroads of America Council of the Boy Scouts of America for the Board of Review this summer.
Thadeus is a graduate of St. Maria Goretti Catholic School and will be a senior at Westfield High School next fall.
