Tuesday, November 28th is the annual national day of giving called #GivingTuesday. Occurring five days after Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday is the culmination of other national movements you may be familiar with like Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Initiated in 2012, #GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement that unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world.
Since 2019, the St. Joseph Retreat & Conference Center has participated in this day of generosity via an email campaign. Each year, we strive to share an annual update of retreat center activities so our donors can see the scope of services and people we touch each day.
In the email, we include a wish list of items donors can purchase for us. These ‘in-kind’ donations are any goods that are donated to a nonprofit other than money. In addition, we use money collected from this email campaign to purchase items off our wish list. All of these donations are tax deductible. Each winter we send thank you letters as tax receipts for this purpose.
We also include pictures of in-kind donations and items purchased with donor funds from the year before. We want our donors to see how their gifts are being put to use!
As the reach of the retreat center has expanded, so has the success of the campaign! Through the years, this campaign has allowed us to purchase needed items like washing machines and tablecloths as well as spiritual items like books, vestments and statues. Donors have given us an electric piano, sports equipment, books, tables, chairs and clocks! We’ve had donors give of their talent in refurbishing statues and recovering chairs too.
